Great new films you've probably not yet seen!

Today I bring you two worthy reccomendations from the Bath Film Festival! I urge you to get your paws on these! All I can say is: I wish I had time to see more movies at BFF... They feature exactly the kind of films I'd like to see more of, but usually I'm not quite sure where to find them or even how to find out about them. I think they've done a SPLENDID job of curating cinematic treats on a limited budet.

Silent Souls
Russia 2010
Director: Aleksei Fedorchenko
“In this land there are only two gods: love and water”
When Miron’s beloved wife Tanya passes away, he asks his colleague Aist to help him say goodbye to her according to the rituals of the Merja culture, an ancient Finno-Ugric tribe from Lake Nero, a picturesque region in West-Central Russia.
Absolutely beautiful.

Sound if my voice
USA 2011
Director: Zal Batmanglij
An amateur journalist and his girlfriend get pulled in while they investigate a cult whose leader claims to be from the future. A perfect example of a movie that makes you questin everything about it.
Can you tell if it's sci-fi?

Warsaw Village Band

Modern polish... ethno-folk? Hard to describe except that it's very beautiful, sad, sharp and... raw. Visceral. Shamanic even.
Warsaw Village Band makes me miss home.

Isn't this gorgeous!?

I was flicking through Ana Serrano's ok, bye the blog (see: Cartonlandia) and it is full of amazing, inspiring posts! I couldn't help but yoink this one - I love it on so many levels...
The Meena Women

"Meena
, one of the oldest tribal communities residing in eastern Rajasthan and parts of Madhya Pradesh, has succeeded in preserving its cultural identity even today."

"The art of the Meenas is a collective, community art, where every member of the community, predominantly women, has honed their Mandana painting skills. It is primarily a non-professional art practiced by the community women in various realms of life. The art of embellishing mud-houses with these beautiful Mandana paintings is learned from elders; there is no formal training or apprenticeship. The continuity in its practice closely knits the mundane activities of daily life and the production of utilitarian objects. This art is functional, no matter whether its objective is to give aesthetic shape to tools and articles of everyday use, or to bolster the ideology of social structures."
"Mandana has persisted among the Meena women through generations, passing from mother to daughter by means of social exchange. These women are highly skilled and well ‘educated’ in terms of their long and rich experiences. For these women artists, simple shapes like squares, circles, triangles, etc. become the alphabet for an exercise in picture writing. When asked for the reason behind these creations, their answer is simple and spontaneous – “chokha lage che” (i.e., it feels good to make them). But when one goes into the details of this art, one finds many parallel stories and reasons for Mandana being so religiously practiced." Read more here!

Caught me eye

Rango: Bride of the Zar
"Rango, led by Hassan Bergamon, delve into their sacred, magical repertoire as well as music from street weddings and half-remembered Sudanese army songs. Bride of the Zar (a magico-healing ceremony) delivers a wide palette of sounds, which range from a slave's entreaty to old gods, to polyrhythmic explosions of love, possession and pure joy."
- Tim Cumming, The Independent 01.05.2010

After a review like this I just had to check them out, and they are amazing!

This soothes me...

"Huun-Huur-Tu come from the former Soviet Autonomous Republic of Tuva, a sparsely settled region of grasslands, boreal forests, and mountain ridges that lies 2,500 miles east of Moscow Russia, situated at the center of Asia, north of Mongolia. This indigenous music highlights rare instruments and preserves what is arguably some of the world's oldest form of music making. The best known genre of Tuvan music, xöömei (throat-singing), comprises what one might call a lexicon of musical onomatopoeia in which natural sounds are mimetically transformed into musical representations."

"Just think - they played this music 5000 years ago. When something lasts that long, it becomes more... real, doesn't it?" - A.

Boho yoohoo!

As I'm packing away for a weekend in Andalucia (XD I know!), I make sure to grab only the hippiest, brightest and lightest of things. No tweed skirts, no ironed shirts (or, as one elderly lady I examined this week pointed out with distaste: blouses, because only men wear shirts;) and definately no raincoat! I am becoming one with the holiday spirit, and it is easy enough if you look the part! So wish me luck with the happiest elegy to the Summer I could think of. She will be missed!
If you like the idea but aren't exactly ready to jump on a flight to Spain, here is a choice of cheerful "mourning" jewellery;) It's definately one way to carry a bit of the Summer around with you throughout those cold days ahead...

A few of my favourite vintage boho jewellery finds from Etsy. They are all amazing, unique and really not that pricey for how good they look! What's not to boho?;)

Cushion concussion!

I wouldn't go for a neutral home decor even if you paid me to do it! Whoever is responsible for spreading the decorative leprosy that is magnolia wall paint, should be locked up in a cell untill they cry themselves to sleep.
My living space is small and the uk is, on average, murky and wet. So my cunning strategy is to fight back with brightness, color and patterns that remind me of warmer lands... I wouldn't mind being hit with one of these...@_@ But why oh why is beauty so expensive?

It is a fact: embroidered textiles have the power to make me gasp. And stare at my wallet with unfulfilled expectations...

And, finally, these 3. Jaw-dropping antique beauty and drop dead prices...

And here are the lovely softies that already adorn my home!^^:
