Rodriguez

Watched Searching for Sugarman last night - it was SO GOOD!
A documentary about a '70s musician who, unbeknownst to most of the world (and, perhaps most surprisingly: himself), has been a total hit in South Africa. A favourite of the anti-apartheid movement, he's been "bigger than Elvis" for decades.
Weird!
And pretty fucking awesome.

I just bought the soundtrack and looks like today is the perfect sunny day to walk around listening to it in search of my favourite drug (caffeine) ;)

Yum!

Merry Xmas!

Another Christmas I have to work throughout - not fun! But made super special by my one and only legitimate sibling who's hanging out with me after work in rainy Bath, helping me decorate my lemon (Christmas) tree and fill my flat with fish and cake and... reggae music, apparently.
It was the right time to watch two vintage movies I've been meaning to see for aaaaages: Sixteen Candles and My Neighbour Totoro - complete 80's nostalgia feast over at my house!

Totoro reminded me of all the summers me and my little sister spent at our elderly aunt's house in the Polish country side. Thinking of our time there now feels almost as unreal as... watching an animated movie.
The air was dry and hot with the occasional rain storm, wheat and potatoes stretched in the fields all around the small village. Water came from a bucket-and-chain well in the yard we were not allowed to use without supervision and were too scared to come up to because we were told a little girl had drowned there once.
We never brought many toys so instead we played with mud, frogs and butterflies. Rusty nails. One summer I drew and cut out a herd of wild horses to play with. They all had individual names.
I remember waking up everyday to the sound of cock-a-doodle-doos in a room full of religious paraphernalia (statues, candles, framed portraits of bleeding hearts, rosaries, tapestries, plastic flowers in waterless vases), being relieved that their inherent creepiness had somewhat dissipated in daylight.
Our aunt lived in a wooden hut made up of 2 small chambers (one her kitchen/living room/bedroom/pantry, the other the guest room/Jesus room) heated by a wood-burning stove/oven, which needed to be on even in the summer for cooking, and meant you couldn't stay at home during the day even if you wanted to. Instead you could go wandering around the woods looking for apples, plums, berries and mushrooms or explore the abandoned sheds, trees and bushes and make forts. We spent our days chasing chickens, being attacked by grumpy geese, sometimes helping the neighbour's children walk the cows to and from the fields. Every Friday we gathered in front of the one grainy black and white TV in the village to watch the Smurfs.

It was such a magical time.
I am very grateful for it.
For the freedom to roam and explore the world without being restrained by technology or fear of abduction, broken bones, infectious diseases or ghosts.

Love and Merry Christmas!

Great new films you've probably not yet seen!

Today I bring you two worthy reccomendations from the Bath Film Festival! I urge you to get your paws on these! All I can say is: I wish I had time to see more movies at BFF... They feature exactly the kind of films I'd like to see more of, but usually I'm not quite sure where to find them or even how to find out about them. I think they've done a SPLENDID job of curating cinematic treats on a limited budet.

Silent Souls
Russia 2010
Director: Aleksei Fedorchenko
“In this land there are only two gods: love and water”
When Miron’s beloved wife Tanya passes away, he asks his colleague Aist to help him say goodbye to her according to the rituals of the Merja culture, an ancient Finno-Ugric tribe from Lake Nero, a picturesque region in West-Central Russia.
Absolutely beautiful.

Sound if my voice
USA 2011
Director: Zal Batmanglij
An amateur journalist and his girlfriend get pulled in while they investigate a cult whose leader claims to be from the future. A perfect example of a movie that makes you questin everything about it.
Can you tell if it's sci-fi?

animated surrealism: Solipsist

Eerie, colorful, bizarre.
Directed by Andrew Huang and a recipient of the Special Jury Prize for Experimental Short at the Slamdance Film Festival.

What's better than a bit of art to cheer one up on a gloomy Friday?
How about "three more night shifts to go until my holiday in Europe"?
The thought alone puts the colour right back in my cheeks!

I must see this movie!

Roman Polanski's new black comedy "Carnage" sounds riveting! Based on a theatre play about two pairs of parents who meet to politely discuss their sons' fight at school, but instead descend into an evening of eruptive chaos, it promises a rare taste of true filmed theatre. I can't wait to see how the controversial polish director (yeah, yeah: let's layer on my Polish pride) dissects humanity with 4 actors, 1 set in less than an hour and a half.
And reportedly makes Kate Winslet vomit on the silver screen.
Can not bloody wait!
