Sister Rosetta Tharpe

Fascinating woman whom I might have never heard of, if it wasn't for BBC Radio 4 humming gently in the background while I revised for finals today. She was a child prodigy, first great recording star of gospel music in the late 1930s, a woman torn between her deep religious roots, and a burning talent and creativity which led her to "devil's music" and disreputable Jazz nightclubs. A great influence on many famous musicians from Elvis Presley to Aretha Franklin and Johnny Cash. She's got a voice and a vitality modern stars can only dream of!
